Can a security app make you happier

Single parent Heather Hay has a busy life - balancing a career with being a mother of two daughters Olivia (14) and Annabel (12).

“I have a really full on life being Mum, Dad, cook, cleaner and full time worker,” says Heather.

At 14 Olivia is old enough to look after her younger sister after school but for Heather, the girls’ safety is paramount.

“I like to know that they’ve arrived home and the house is safe for them to walk in to. It’s something that plays on my mind a lot, I always want to know where they are.”

A recently installed Morepork smart home security system means she can now, literally, keep an eye on what is going on at home.

“I can check in just before 3pm if I want to to see that everything is safe and nobody is there, and I can get a notification on my smartphone if any of the window or door sensors have been triggered.”

Effects of a stressful life.

Health psychologist and emotions researcher Nathan Consedine says busy lives mean people are more anxious than they have ever been.

“The more complexity that you have in the way that you live, particularly complexity that you feel you have to manage, or complexity that is generating anxiety, the more difficult life will become,” says Consedine.

Our bodies react to stress by increasing the heart rate and releasing the hormone cortisol.

Too much of that, for too long is bad for us Consedine says.
“When you repeat that response a lot and it doesn’t go away i.e. the person remains slightly worried or ruminative over a long period of time you cause damage to physical systems.”

Could an APP reduce your anxiety?

Morepork is the new security system from Spark designed to take some of the worry out of everyday life by allowing users to check in and monitor what is going on at home from their smartphone.

CEO of Spark Ventures Rod Snodgrass says it’s about protecting the things you love.

“It’s all about making life easier for people, and in the case of Morepork about making safer healthier smarter homes. The interesting thing around Morepork is we think it gives people freedom by giving them control.”

For Heather Hay, knowing more means worrying less and taking some of the stress out of her life.

“I know that at approximately 4pm the front door is going to pop open and I am going to see two precious faces walking through the door.”

Home Security From Your Smartphone

What is Morepork and How Does it Work

The Deane family of Waimauku recently welcomed a new addition to their family, a Morepork.

“I was after a system where I was able to get video of our house and surrounds and view that from any device I happen to be using.”

Living in the country, John Deane was after more than a traditional alarm could offer.

“If someone unexpected arrives I’ll get some video of the vehicle, I’ll get their registration plate, I’ll get an alert. I can jump online and see what’s going on.”

Morepork is the latest offering from Spark, a ‘smart’ home security system which allows John to monitor his home remotely through his Smartphone.

A series of cameras and sensors set up around his home send information directly to John’s Smartphone or Ipad, and the Morepork will also send him an alert if they pick up any movement in the house.

Users can ‘peek in’ during the day via the Morepork app, alarm and de-alarm the house remotely,
check whether the garage door is closed or whether the kids got home from school safely. “The difference really with Morepork versus a standard house alarm, if you think of a standard house alarm, it’s hard wired to your house. You need to access your house, or be home to know what’s actually going on.”

Smart home technology is a growth area; General Manager of Smart Living Gemma Croombs says moving into smart home security was a natural fit for Spark.

“Quite often there are solutions that we don’t even know are possible out there. And we are going to be continually looking for those types of technologies and bringing them to New Zealand.”

Bird Watching - Privacy and Security with Spark's Morepork

The smartphone has become a remote for life, and now you can even use it to keep an eye on what is going on at home.

Morepork is the new smart home security system from Spark, but unlike traditional alarms it gives users the ability to monitor their homes remotely.

A series of cameras and sensors set up around the home feed information straight to a smartphone. The Morepork will even tell you if something has been disturbed at home.

CEO of Home, Mobile & Business Jason Paris says Spark have worked hard to make sure the system is secure.

“Spark New Zealand brand stands for safety and security and being trusted. And that’s exactly what the Morepork product does.”

Spark have partnered with American company Alarm.Com, who have been successful in the rapidly growing smart home market.

Smart Living GM Gemma Croombs says the finding right partner was important.

“They are a global provider, they provide the platform to 2.3 million consumers and they’ve given us absolute assurances of their security.”

Morepork users will be the only ones who can see what is happening in their home, and choose who else can access their system.

“All the information is passing back and forth between the user and their system so the biggest security issue is if the user gives away their password.”

Spark are urging customers to protect their Morepork by protecting their password and limiting who has access to it.

“You are kind of treating your phone as a portal to your house and so it’s crucial you treat that like a cash point card.”

Private investigator Daniel Torensen says with more and more of our lives moving online, people need to really think about how to protect that data.

“If you’ve got your pin number don’t put it in in front of people, and just protect it really, really carefully.”

Spark says New Zealanders have proven to be early adopters to new technology, and Jason Paris is confident Morepork will be popular.

Spark Creates Life-Size Emoji House To Demo Morepork Smart Home Security

Driving to the airport and suddenly worry that you’ve left the front door open? Sitting at work in a sweat thinking you’ve left the dog inside? You’re not alone.

A family of Emoji have revealed how they too suffer those ‘oh moments’ – and why, as digital natives, they’re now taking care of their home life on their smartphones with a home security system called Morepork.

For the launch of Morepork today, Spark’s imagined what a life-size two story Emoji house would look like and built it in the foyer of their Auckland HQ. Spark’s ‘Morepork House’ is a live demo set for the product and the set for two on-line films featuring the Emoji family who live in the house.

Emoji is the fastest growing language on the planet, letting us all express quickly and clearly how we feel. The pictograms have changed how we communicate on-line and are now breaking out of their digital world to help us in real life to do everything from ordering a pizza to logging in to your bank account. They’ve even landed a Hollywood movie taking Emoji from the mobile screen to the big screen.

Spark’s GM of Smart Living, Gemma Croombs, says Morepork’s designed to look after the things people love - their homes, their kids, the things they’re emotional about, so an Emoji family are perfect to tell the story of how good it feels to have Morepork watching over them.

“Has the dog been put out?” – And other tales from Spark’s Emojiville

Featuring only sounds, music and Emoji, the Morepork films peek into the lives of the family (Mum, Dad, their little boy and his dog) living in Emojiville. The films show for the first time what an Emoji family’s world might look like ….and what they worry their dog gets up to if it’s left inside.

Viewers get to go inside the mind’s eye of the characters, seeing the catastrophe the Emoji family imagine unfolding at home when they think they’ve forgotten to lock the door or put the dog out.

Gemma Croombs, says the films capture that moment of panic, the “oh moment” we all feel when we think we’ve forgotton to take care of something at home.
“For me it’s worrying about whether I’ve put the garage door down. Until I got my Morepork, I had to turn the car around and go home to double check – otherwise I’d spend all day feeling anxious about what could be happening.”

As you’d expect from a family who live their lives on-line, there are a few surprises that pop up in the Emojis’ heads before they check their Morepork to see everything’s okay.

Dad thinks the dog’s throwing a party, his son thinks burglars are going straight for the fridge…including his coveted Bacon and Taco Emojis, while Mum’s worried about her on-line shopping being stolen (she’s bought ‘that dress’ in cream and gold AND blue and black).

“We all know those moments, the crazy scenarios we image might be happening before that great feeling of relief when we can actually see there’s nothing to worry about – it’s a series of emotions best expressed on the faces of our Emoji family.”

Croombs says the use of Emoji in the smart home security category is a first. “Morepork is a smart, disruptive tech with the product and service designed to be ‘digital first’. We needed to follow that approach in how we show our customers what Morepork can do for them.”

“Spark’s been speaking Emoji for over a year now, it’s a language our customers love. Morepork House and our family’s films create a great digital experience to show how having Morepork will make life easier.”

Around 100 unique Emojis were created to bring to life the Emoji family’s home and Emojiville. The house will be a live demo set for Morepork at Spark in Auckland for the next two weeks.

What Does the Owl Say - Why Spark’s New Digital Offering is a Morepork

Small, fluffy and very cute - many of us will have heard the call, but few will have actually seen one.

The often heard but rarely seen New Zealand morepork, or ruru, is seen as a guardian by many Maori tribes says Ngarimu Blair of Ngati Whatua.

“Something that watches over and looks out for you and your family, or your tribe.”

Spark took inspiration from the little bird with the big voice when naming their latest product – the Morepork – a smart home security system.

“We really like that it’s a New Zealand name but we also really like the fact that the Maori consider it to be a watchful guardian” says GM of Smart Living Gemma Croombs.

“And for a home security solution we feel that is absolutely perfect.”

Ngarimu Blair worked with Spark to ensure the name was used appropriately.

“I think more and more New Zealand companies are looking to our culture to identify themselves as being New Zealand Aotearoa.”

He says the process itself was the right thing for Spark to do.

“I think it’s really positive that our language and our New Zealand icons are being leveraged if that’s being done in a respectful manner, then that’s great.”

Even though many of us won’t have seen a real live morepork, Spark are confident New Zealanders will understand and make the connection with the name.
